“I might as well go home,” Lisa says, taking a final swipe at the polished butcher-block counter. “This place is dead.”

“You know, I can’t help feeling it’s more than the snow.” I tuck the notebook with the inventory and menu list under my arm and lean against one side of the counter.

She stops and turns to me. “What do you mean?”

“I can’t put my finger on it.” I think a moment. “I don’t know much about skiing, but I wouldn’t think there’s so much snow that it would keep avid skiers from coming. Maybe I’ll go down to Dream Slopes and see how they’re doing.”

“Oh, I’m sure they’re struggling, too,” Lisa jumps in.

“Maybe, but it wouldn’t hurt to check it out. You want to come with me?”

“I—I’ve got some studying to do. I’d like to go home.”

I shrug. “Suit yourself.”

“You’d better be careful doing the private investigator thing. Snooping can get you into trouble.”

I laugh. “I’m hardly Angela Lansbury. Just curious, that’s all.”

“Remember what that does to the cat?”

“Now you’re starting to act like Mitch.”

“How so?”

I think maybe I’ve said too much. I don’t want to talk about Mitch to Lisa—or anyone for that matter. He’s not only my boss, but—well, I don’t know what else, but I do feel a certain loyalty to him.

“Oh, I don’t know.” I wave my arm and look around. “I suppose Mitch won’t care if we close shop early. It’s two o’clock. I’ll go down and ask him. You go on home, Lisa. I can handle things here.”

“Well, if you’re sure.”

I nod.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I watch as Lisa pulls on her coat and hat and slips through the door with a final wave. Satisfied that the shop is clean, I pull on my coat and shove through the door. The snow seems to have slowed a little, but there’s still hardly anyone on site today. It’s very strange.

I head to the B and B and once I’m there, step inside. “Is Mitch around?” I call out to Granny, who’s sitting on the sofa in the great room.

“He’s around somewhere, but goodness knows where.”

I take a deep breath. “There hasn’t been any business in the shop for the last two hours—except for one man grabbing a quick sandwich. I’m going on an errand, and I’ll be right back.”

Granny nods, her knitting needles clacking away as she works with skillful hands on the baby blanket.

I turn around and close the door behind me. In no time, I’m pulling my car into the Dream Slopes parking lot. I’m stunned at what I see there. The place is packed. As I suspected, all this snow wouldn’t keep away serious skiers. What’s going on?

Once I get out of my car, I hear some young women a few feet away talking. The wind howls between us, making it hard to hear. I pull my scarf closer to my neck and try to edge up behind them. Maybe something they say will give me a clue as to why everyone is coming to Dream Slopes today instead of Windsor Mountain.
